Children at Risk (CAR)

Our CAR program operates through the local church to meet the needs of children in the community. Kone Kmeng is currently supporting 9 projects to respond holistically to the needs of children at risk in Cambodia. They are based in the provinces of Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, Kandal, Phnom Penh and Svay Rieng.

These projects have 3 focus areas:

1. Education

Some projects have a non-formal education program with the intention to integrate the children back into public school, with a follow-up procedure once they are fully integrated into public school. Other projects have focused on supplemental education, meaning that the children are going to public school but need additional education to develop their level of learning. Other projects are running a pre-school to prepare children to enter public school. A new program to help students, from the remote areas, continue their education, is to start a dormitory for the students in the town.

2. Raising Social Awareness

The aim is to conduct training within the communities with children, adults and community leaders on issues that impact on the well-being of children. Trainings are conducted on child trafficking, child rights and the challenges of domestic violence. As the community gains more knowledge about the issues then our hope is that the risks to children can be reduced.

3. Family Economic Improvement

Many risks children face in Cambodia are due to poverty and a poor family economic environment. Our projects respond to this need through the implementation of agricultural development plans, the establishment of small businesses, vocational training and micro loans.
