Save the Children Project

In late 2006, Phany met three children, a boy named Sok,* his younger brother Virak, and Thida, their younger sister, in Banteay Meanchey Province. Pastor Phirum told Phany that these three children had never been able to go to school because their parents worked in Thailand. Sok, Virak, and Thida and their three younger siblings were living with their grandmother. The older children had to take care of the younger children so they could not go to school. The family’s financial situation was pretty bad. The children did not have enough to eat and the family was in debt.

In 2008, the Save the Children Project started a new program called the Family Development Program to help families generate more income. Through this program, the "Yea" the 70-year-old grandmother received a small capital loan to start a small business selling noodles and groceries. The business has been successful so now she can earn 10,000 riel ($2.50 USD) per day. As a result, the children have enough food to eat for every meal.

In 2007, the Save Children Project was started in their village. Sok and Virak, the two older boys, were selected to attend the Non-formal Education Program which helps students to enter or re-enter public school at the appropriate grade level. Several months later, they were able to enter the local public school. Sok now in the 3rd grade, is one of the best students in the school. Virak is also doing well in the 2nd grade.

Because of the Family Development Program, "Chanda," the children's mother, was able to stop working in Thailand and to return to be with her family. She received a small capital loan and training so that she could begin growing vegetables in 2008. A year later, in June 2009, the family was able to pay off all of their debts! Dara, the children’s father has also been able to return from working in Thailand and now works part of the year as a construction worker and also helps with growing vegetables.

The four younger children are preparing to enter the local public school. Their parents and grandmother can look after them and provide for their needs so they can now enjoy their childhood. Their future looks much more promising now! *All family members names have been given.
